The way you think, day in day out, affects all aspects of your life. Learning to listen to your "internal dialogue" will help you recognize your thought patterns and how they may be affecting the way you handle the stressful situations of daily living.
Many people have found that, when they tune in to their internal dialogue, much of it is negative. Thoughts like, "I could never do that" and "What if I fail?" can seriously impact the way you behave. This, in turn, affects every aspect of your life. When we are stressed, certain hormones are produced by the body. When released infrequently, these hormones are harmless but, when produced continuously, they can cause serious damage. Cardiovascular disease is caused in part by the continuous production of stress hormones.
The Power of Positive Attitude:
Positive attitude helps to cope more easily with the daily affairs of life. It brings optimism into your life, and makes it easier to avoid worry and negative thinking. If you adopt it as a way of life, it will bring constructive changes into your life, and makes them happier, brighter and more successful. With a positive attitude you see the bright side of life, become optimistic and expect the best to happen. It is certainly a state of mind that is well worth developing and strengthening.
Positive Affirmations Can Help You Change:
What are you to do if you seem inclined to focus on the negative? Even though you may be pre-disposed to negative thinking due to genetics or your childhood environment, you can learn to move your thinking to the positive side. Learning to use positive affirmations will help, as will sharpening your awareness to nip negative thinking in the bud before it escalates. Learning to question and re-structure your thinking when it turns negative will help you think positively more often and stay that way.
Positive Thinking Takes Practice:
If you're a person whose first thoughts about the meaning of something that's happened are negative thoughts, be encouraged by the knowledge that the first step toward a positive attitude and positive thinking is to simply think another thought. Thoughts are under your control. Your pessimistic way of thinking is habit; habits can be changed. When you catch yourself thinking a pessimistic thought about an event in your life, first evaluate the evidence. What are the facts--not the fears--but the facts?Next, think of alternate explanations and future outcomes. When your old car suddenly makes a strange noise you may jump to the pessimistic conclusion that repair will be costly, but maybe a minor repair will solve the problem.
Positive attitude creates success at work:
You look over to your work colleague, who is irritatingly happy, fielding calls while filing reports and making the boss smile. And you wonder – how do they do it? Before considering calling in sick tomorrow just to escape your in-tray, indulge in a little motivation training to turn those workplace mountains into fileable molehills. Former Brisbane Lions AFL team co-captain Alistair Lynch, who is now general manager of sports management and consultancy firm Velocity Sports, says staying motivated is essential to success.
