Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai called Monday for the speedy formation of a “consensual” government to replace the current Cabinet of caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati.
“We want a government that enjoys a consensus as soon as possible,” Rai told reporters at Beirut airport ahead of an official visit to France.
Rai stressed the need for Lebanon to reach a new electoral law that provides fair representation to all groups in the country, adding that Bkirki does not dictate political opinion.
“All the political parties agree on a hybrid law and we bless whatever the Lebanese agree upon,” he added.
Rai met President Michel Sleiman at Baabda Palace prior to leaving for France.
During his four-day visit to Paris, Rai will hold talks with French President Francois Hollande and other senior officials, including Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius.
